Motion Bristol, one of the most legendary clubs in the city, (if not the most legendary club) will be hosting The Warehouse stage at NASS 2023. The club’s heritage and importance in the clubbing scene in Bristol as well as its relationship with street culture makes it the perfect fit to host the ravers’ stage at NASS.
Did you know Motion used to be a skate park before becoming a club? The form might have changed, but the aim did not. Drum and bass is one of the facets of electronic dance music that emerged in the UK in the early 1990s. It evolved from earlier forms of breakbeat and jungle music, which had emerged from the UK’s underground rave scene in the late 1980s.
Before that, skateboarding quickly made its way across the pond and found a home in the UK’s streets and parks. Clubbing and skateboarding are both a way of life that values creativity, self-expression, and a willingness to push boundaries so it doesn’t come as a surprise for skaters and ravers to share spaces. Today, skating remains an important part of the UK’s underground culture, as so does clubbing, more so in Bristol. In the intersection of D&B and DIY sports, Motion has always been at the centre, with the spirit of creativity and individuality that defines the scene.
Over the years, D&B has become a key part of the underground music scene, particularly in the UK. Drum n bass means – or more so IS – energy and willingness to be free. Bristol has been named the capital of Drum n Bass and therefore it has automatically acquired that connotation of a city for freedom and a hub for self-expression in other areas of the underground such as street art.
This time, Motion will be bringing something fresh to NASS, providing The Warehouse with a techno and house lineup as opposed to our classic drum & bass display to include the genres that fully represent the underground worldwide with headliners Hannah Laing, Mella Dee, Sammy Virji & Notion. These great DJs will be playing alongside Main Stage headliners Chase & Status, Wu Tang Clan & Little Simz. Check the full NASS 2023 lineup here
